Round One of Two

Can you believe it's been a month? We've missed you. The longing is over this weekend in a very big way, though. It's the first of a Mister Saturday Night two-Saturday doubleheader. For this one, Justin's returning home to play alongside Eamon, Caribou's joining the festivities, and the big, blue soundsystem is already plugged in and warmed up.

Tickets for this and next weekends' parties are on sale here. We've sold a lot for this weekend already, and even though we're at a pretty big space (location details to the right) there's a chance that we might fill up, so if you're sure you want to come, it's a good idea to purchase in advance. Otherwise, RSVP, and get there early!

Fertile Times: An Interview with Caribou

The man behind the moniker Caribou is Dan Snaith. As you're no doubt aware by now, he's DJing with us this weekend as Mister Saturday Night returns after a longer than planned break.

We've been chatting with him on email for the past week or so in anticipation of the party. It was a pleasure to hear that he knew all about us and what we do, and he's clearly enthused and looking forward to the gig.

He kindly agreed to answer a few questions to help whet your appetite for this coming Saturday.

Another Time

Regretfully we have to cancel this weekend's edition of the Mister. The visa application of our guest, Todd Terje, was unusually delayed and won't be processed in time for him to travel. We wouldn't ordinarily cancel a night because a guest couldn't appear, as it's all about the party and not any one DJ, but on this occasion with Mister Carter in Europe and the huge anticipation around Todd Terje's appearance, we feel it makes most sense. We're in the process of finalizing another date for later in the year for Terje to return, so keep an eye out for that.

Otherwise, we'll see you in a few weeks when Justin returns to play alongside Eamon, Caribou and Joy Orbison and then again in May when Justin and Eamon take a whole night for themselves. Two Saturdays ago it happened again. Great music, a nice vibe and lots of good people letting go and getting down. The talented Marshall McDonald took a few pics to show it off.

Eamon Stretches Out with a Little Help from Soul

It's February. Love (and arctic wind) is in the air. And what do we do when a holiday rolls around? We treat it like any other night: specially. For this Valentine edition of the Mister, expect what you always get – pristine audio, corners to get cozy and friendly people to greet you at every turn.

Eamon's stretching out for a long haul. With Justin off on a continental exploration, he's got at least six hours of music to program. Joining him is a fellow from Germany, whose music we've been loving for a long while. Whether he's producing under his harder-leaning Jackmate persona or his more delicate moniker, SoulPhiction, Michel Baumann makes music that's full of love.

And speaking of love, we'll be doling out beers on the house for the first hour of the party to get those juices flowing. Pre-sale tickets here. Full details to the right.

This Weekend & Beyond

This weekend, we're back to doing the Mister like you know it best. No holiday extravaganza or collaboration, just a good, old-fashioned, one-room, one-soundsystem, Justin-Eamon-and-guest, free-beer-for-the-first-hour kind of get down. Does that mean it won't be special? Of course not.

In fact, it will be extra special. Our guest is Omar S, who, making his third showing at MSN, is now our most frequent musical companion. It's no wonder why we've asked him back as often as we have. In addition to consistently producing tracks that make their way into Justin and Eamon's sets, he's a phenomenal DJ, a master of dancefloor hypnosis. This will also be the last time that Eamon and Justin play together in New York for a while. Justin's headed off to Berlin for a few months, and their only joint gigs until April will be in Europe. That makes this a going-away party of sorts.

It's certainly not the kind of going-away where you should be shedding tears, though: the future's looking bright. While Justin's away, joining Eamon on deck duty will be SoulPhiction, Greg Wilson and Todd Terje – the latter of whom we've been trying to bring back to New York for years. And when Justin comes back in April, he and Eamon will be joined by Caribou(!!!!!) and... well, that's enough for now, but there's another exclamation-point worthy guest playing with us on Saturday, April 9th.

From the Photo Booth: Just Like I Pictured It

There were eye-patches; there were superheroes; and there were balloons. It was New York, Just Like I Pictured It. (If you want more pictures, check Spank's blog, where we think they'll be posting more soon.)

Freeki Egyptian Lover

This is a flyer from about two years ago, when we were still doing Mister Saturday Night at Santos. Why do we post it now, you may ask?

On that particular night, The Egyptian Lover, who I'd hipped to KDJ's epic, then unreleased song 'Freeki MF', in this pre-party interview, came downstairs during Moodymann's set and asked him if he'd brought it with him. Turns out Kenny had left the record at home.

The rest is history: Egypt plugged in his 808, dropped a beat, and they did an impromptu rendition on the spot. Too dark for video cameras, the moment only lived on in the minds of people who were at the party, but it inspired Moody and Egypt to link up and collaborate. Today, that collaboration is finally seeing the light of day.

Next Up, Mister Saturday and Mister S

After a two-floored New Year's Eve party and a collaboration with Spank, Mister Saturday Night heads back to the basics: one dancefloor, two residents, one guest and a real nice set of speakers. We love a big to-do, but simplicity is golden.

Everything else that usually makes it special will be in effect as well, with a reasonably priced bar run by folks with a sweet demeanor, free beer from 10pm to 11pm, a door staff that's genteel and a space that feels like home. It's always good to be here.

note. To be clear, Justin's not pulling an escape from New York/everything's better in Berlin move… New York beats Berlin every Mister Saturday Night of the year as far as he's concerned. It's just a work thing.

NYE with The Mister: Sold Out

Hey, folks. The New Year's Eve party is officially sold out. There won't be any tickets sold at the door, and only ticket-holders will be sent the address.

Fear not, though. We do great parties all year round, and if you didn't get tickets to this one, we'll have plenty of good stuff for you to enjoy with us in January, February and beyond.

No matter what you do for the festivities, we hope it's a great one for you, and we wish you a happy 2011!!!

The Final Details for NYE

The big night is almost upon us! Here's a recap of what's happening at this special expanded edition of Mister Saturday Night..

In one room, residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will be joined for a midnight set by Detroit wunderkind Kyle Hall, riding a very special sound system all night long. Local production duo Bad Decision open proceedings up from 9pm.

In the other room is Martyn, a producer recognized as one of the world's best known dubstep creators but who also plays diverse sets which find the likes of Prince, J Dilla and Washed Out rubbing shoulders with more futuristic sounds. Rounding out the room with Martyn is DJ Qu, a fantastic local jock and the man behind of one of our favorite labels, Strength Music.

We're also taking extra special care of the production for this one. Both rooms will be fantastically bedecked by Jessica Grindstaff, a set designer whose work has graced stages from Amsterdam to Australia to our hometown Brooklyn Academy of Music (and our Halloween party back in October).

We've also got an open champagne bar all night long AND a special hand printed mix CD created especially for the party by Eamon & Justin (limited to the first 200 folks through the door). There's going to be plenty of room to dance, relax and chat with friends in both rooms as well as an outdoor patio where you can get a breath of fresh air. There will also be plenty of bathrooms and bar staff to keep things flowing nicely through the night.

Remember that this is a ticket-only affair. Tickets are selling quickly so get yours now over here to avoid disappointment. We will not be selling tickets on the door! Tickets are all sold out.

Ticket-holders will be emailed the address details on the evening of Dec 30th and also right after sales close at noon on the 31st. Rest assured that the venue is at a convenient location, close to train stops accessible in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

This New Year's Eve, Mister Saturday Night is bringing you the best of both worlds.

We're keeping our unique loft party intimacy, with plenty of room to dance and high quality music with amazing sound – but we're expanding things a bit. In one room, residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will be joined for a midnight set by Kyle Hall, a 19-year-old Detroit wunderkind, who's been trailblazing for a new generation of music makers over the past two years. In the other room is Martyn, a producer who challenges all preconceived notions about his status as one of the world's best known dubstep creators by playing sets that are far-flung enough to include Prince, J Dilla and Washed Out. Rounding out the room with Martyn is DJ Qu, a fantastic local jock and the man behind of one of our favorite labels, Strength Music; and opening the festivities for Eamon, Justin and Kyle are production duo Bad Decision.

The multi-roomed event space where the party's going down will be fantastically bedecked by Jessica Grindstaff, a set designer whose work has graced stages from Amsterdam to Australia to our hometown Brooklyn Academy of Music (with the Kronos Quartet, no less).

What else? How about an open champagne bar, not just for the ball drop, but all night? And an outdoor patio where you can get a breath of fresh air or smoke a cigarette? We have both of those.

The catch? In order to keep it intimate (and within the legal capacity of the venue), you have to buy an advance ticket to get in. We won't announce the address (rest assured, though, that it's a convenient location, close to train stops accessible in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and it's not way, way out there), and even if you figure out where it is, we won't be selling any tickets at the door, because it's gonna be sold out.

Weekend Recap

We packed, we played, and we didn't really sleep: it was a good weekend in Mister Saturday Night land. The new loft space felt warmer than ever before, mostly because we fixed our Optikinetics oil wheel projector (the thing producing that Mars-like glow in the picture above).

Eamon and I were both chuffed with our sets ('I've Got A Feeling' by The Beatles closing it out was the easy highlight), and Superpitcher's record selection, mixing and fashion sensibility were full of class – pretty much just what you'd expect from someone who makes such tasteful and lush techno.

Sunday's surprise gig at Le Bain was a great way to wind it down. The view from up there is just lovely; you can see the new World Trade Center in progress. Just a few more floors and it'll be taller than anything else down there. We're surprised and excited to see it's coming along.

A Recap

It was a good weekend. The crowds at both Down N Derby and Boston's No Tomorrow party were full of dressed up weirdos. Friday was mostly about the disco, and Saturday we got to dig into the techno bins. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that the booth at our Boston gig was outfitted with an old UREI, and the soundsystem had been set up by a DJ who used to play at the Paradise Garage. Properly kicking... Thanks to all who came out to the parties. Hopefully we'll see you out this weekend!

Skating and Boston This Weekend

We're playing music for skating tonight and music for Boston tomorrow night. That's disco and disco-influenced for the former and music for early last calls for the latter. We'll see you on the dancefloor/rink.

Other Nights of the Week: Kafka, Cave and Koze

Here it is, folks. This week's run down of what we'll be doing or wishing we were doing. On Tuesday, a trio of contemporary composers takes the tiny stage at Joe's Pub; on Wednesday a newly restored version of Jean-Luc Godard's Breathless is running at Film Forum; and on Thursday, the Phillip Seymour Hoffman who's not an actor, but rather a drone musician, creates some sonic architecture at Glasslands.

We're DJing the Down N Derby roller disco at Good Units on Friday, and on Saturday, while we're up in Boston, DJ Koze and Isolee will be making beautiful things happen at Santos Party House. We're hoping to make it back in time for BAM's matinee of Metamorphosis, a version of the Kafka novella with a score by Nick Cave and Bad Seed, Warren Ellis.
