Eamon Stretches Out with a Little Help from Soul

It's February. Love (and arctic wind) is in the air. And what do we do when a holiday rolls around? We treat it like any other night: specially. For this Valentine edition of the Mister, expect what you always get – pristine audio, corners to get cozy and friendly people to greet you at every turn.

Eamon's stretching out for a long haul. With Justin off on a continental exploration, he's got at least six hours of music to program. Joining him is a fellow from Germany, whose music we've been loving for a long while. Whether he's producing under his harder-leaning Jackmate persona or his more delicate moniker, SoulPhiction, Michel Baumann makes music that's full of love.

And speaking of love, we'll be doling out beers on the house for the first hour of the party to get those juices flowing. Pre-sale tickets here. Full details to the right.

Toughening Up: Live Recording from June 26th

Last week we posted Ivan Smagghe's mix from the party back on June 26th, held outdoors on a hot and sweaty Brooklyn night.

Here is the second part of that recording, Eamon's closing set taking over after Mister Smagghe. A little more on the tougher end of the Mister Saturday Night musical spectrum this one features jams from Marc Houle, Superpitcher, Oni Ayhun, Aril Brikha, Levon Vincent, Harkin & Raney, Blake Baxter a few others.

Download here. And as always, hope you enjoy.

Word To The Wise

'Word to the Wise' is the debut EP from Harkin & Raney on The Rapture and James Friedman's Throne of Blood imprint. Harkin you know, of course, as Mister Saturday Night's very own Eamon Harkin; and Raney is Steve Raney aka Oneauff, his production partner and good pal who hails from North Carolina but is now firmly ensconced in Brooklyn, where the duo have tirelessly been working away on original material and remixes.

Fire Proof Hot Shots

On a particularly beautiful night a couple weeks ago, hundreds of friendly faces packed out Brooklyn Fire Proof to get down under the stars with Justin, Eamon and DJ Harvey. With every last taco devoured by 11, there was nothing left to do but lose it on the dance floor.

If you were there, take a peek at these photos from the evening, and see if you can spot yourself. And if you missed it, don't be jealous–just come this weekend.

Mister Saturday Night Live

It's been more than a while since we posted some live recordings from Mister Saturday Night. The good news is we have three solid mixes for you here and now which comprise the bulk of the party from June 12th at Brooklyn Fire Proof, our first get-down in their wonderful courtyard, the place we're mostly calling home for the summer.

That night, Eamon got things started, and Justin took it home. In between we had a sweet set of deep house from Mister Rick Wade. Give your ears a treat, and have a listen.

Music From The Mister Saturday Night Boys

The gents behind Mister Saturday Night have been taking their moments off from throwing parties and DJing to spend some time in the studio. Justin, a longtime songwriter and singer (if you get close enough to the booth during his sets, you'll probably hear him belting along with CeCe Peniston and Donny Hathaway), co-wrote and does lead and backing vocals on the title track of the new Great Weekend EP It's Now.

Mister Harkin, who's put out a solo edit record or two already, has recently been working in the studio with a North Carolinian named Steve Raney. The two of them tried their hands at remixing Neurotic Drum Band's steamy Robotic Hypnotic Adventure, and well, their version is dope. Clearly we're biased, but really. Dope.

Both records are out at this very moment on Wurst, our compadres in New York who are keeping it real and pressing up good music on VINYL! A Soundcloud stream of both jams are below. Enjoy.

Populette - Mommy (Harkin & Raney Remix)

Populette are Brooklyn's Max Pask and Andrew Potter. Their debut single on Throne of Blood is called 'Mommy'. They asked label mates Harkin & Raney (Mister Saturday Night's Eamon Harkin and his production buddy Steve Raney) to turn in a remix for the 12" release. This is it.

Here's a collection of Eamon's edit releases from over the years. The first two were released on Wurst (read the RA review here) and the second were released his own Subway Series imprint.

Holiday Special

We're throwing a special holiday weekend bash at a lofty space in Brooklyn. We did this before about a month ago–Justin & Eamon laying down the jams all night long and it felt, well, pretty special so we're doing it again.

If you came and got down with us and Horse Meat Disco, you'll know the place–sprung floors, comfy cushions and chairs, and a nice roof where you can have a chat and catch a breath of fresh air. If you're on our email list we'll send you more info this week, if you're not on the list sign up to the right and then let us know you're coming. When you do, you'll get the address info and all that.

Shhh...

We’ve got something special up our sleeves for this weekend. Every Mister Saturday Night is planned with the utmost care, of course, but this one is especially so. We’re moving the soundsystem into an intimate, homey loft in Brooklyn, a neighborhoody place where there are bouncy wood floors made for dancing, quiet nooks where you can hide and nice couches and chairs where you can hang. You can bring your own drinks if you’d like, or if you’d rather not think about that, we’ll have a full bar stocked–whatever your pleasure.

Eamon and Justin will be playing together the entire night, as Danny Wang’s been stranded under the volcano cloud in Europe, so it’s no guests, just the two residents stretching out for at least six hours...

The place where it's happening is a secret, and you'll have to RSVP to mister@mistersaturdaynight.com to find out the details. Feel free to pass the info on to friends, but please be discreet. This place is special, and we want to keep it that way.

We can't wait to spend the night with you.

Mister Saturday Night Takes Minneapolis

It'll be nearly a month before we pop up again in New York, but if you're in Minneapolis, here's a little taste. Mister Saturday Night is headed to First Avenue on Saturday, April 3. Eamon and Justin are headlining the Midwest music institution's main room–the very one in which Prince dedicated this one to his Dad. The party we're playing is called Too Much Love (the brain child of our good friend Peter Lansky aka Soviet Panda), and Justin is playing his Sexy Dancer twelve inch no matter what anyone says.

You can listen to the first half of the set over at WNYC's site where you can also peruse a feature on Justin and Eamon.

This is the second half of the same session and includes jams from Levon Vincent, Moodymann, John Daly, Eddie Amador and Cobblestone Jazz.

President Mister Saturday Lover

It's President's Day weekend. It's Valentine's Day weekend. There's twice the love in the air than a typical long weekend, and we're doing everything we can to get in the spirit. We've got an open bar with Presidente and Champagne to start off the upcoming Mister Saturday Night, and the music is going to be ludicrously good. Justin and Eamon are dropping some gems they picked up over the last few weekends they spent out of town (check the twitter feed for some New Orleans pictures).

The special guest for this weekend is Floating Points. He is astounding, a twenty-three-year-old neuroscientist by day, and by night a producer of some of the most brilliant, musical, evocative tracks we’ve heard in years. If you have come to a Mister Saturday Night party, or heard Eamon and Justin play anywhere in the past year, chances are that you’ve heard his music (and probably loved it). He’s a bridge between dubstep, house and jazz; and everyone from our moms to the most hardened, devout house or techno or disco purists agree. He’s magic.

Unfortunately Azari & III will not be performing because of a passport issue with their vocalist, but fear not, we're already talking to them about another time... And this weekend's going to be good no matter what.

Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin Live From Mister Saturday Night on October 24, 2009

In spite of a torrential downpour and a lot of crazy shenanigans that came along with it (stitches, floods), Mister Saturday Night on October 24, pulled through--not least because of great DJ sets from Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, who book-ended a set from Moodymann. Here are some excerpts from the evening. We hope you enjoy.

Eamon Harkin

Eamon Harkin is one half of Mister Saturday Night and a music obsessed New York transplant from the North of Ireland. He is a DJ, party-thrower, music-producer and a lover of modern art. He will also beat you in a chess match.

Arriving in the US in 2004, Eamon was immediately inspired by his new surroundings — the crossroads of some of his favorite music: punk, indie rock and underground dance music. His inspirations led him to start a party called Calling All Kids, an homage to New York legend Arthur Russell and the vibrant downtown scene of the 1980s. The party’s success catapulted him onto guest spots at the legendary Motherfucker party (including a memorable line-up which included The Cramps), into a residency alongside hip-hop forefather Afrika Bambaataa at APT, and into the driver's seat at a party called FUN. At FUN--the flagship party for the now gone Studio B--Eamon actively led the bookings and production, bringing a rich variety of talent through the doors ranging from the maximal boisterous dance music of Berlin's Modeselektor to old school electro of The Egyptian Lover and the new school disco of Escort.

During this time he somehow managed to hold down a bi-monthly residency in Berlin at TAPE, a club which hosts the worlds freshest DJ talent on a weekly basis and take in numerous tours of Europe playing the respected Phonica party in London, Pilooski's DIRTY Soundsystem party in Paris as well as guest spots at 24 Hours in Stockholm, The Button Factory in Dublin, Erste Liga in Munich, Le Baron in Paris, and Melkweg in Amsterdam.

After his time at Studio B, Eamon started Prime Time with his old friend James Friedman — a showcase for classically minded yet forward thinking dance music which hosted guests spanning from Stacey Pullen to Hercules & Love Affair to Greg Wilson at Santos Party House and LOVE.

These days Eamon focuses on Mister Saturday Night with partner Justin Carter and organizes the serene, outdoor, summertime series Sunday Best whilst also producing remixes and original productions for Wurst Music Co, Throne of Blood and Runaway's On the Prowl with his production partner Steve Raney (as 'Harkin & Raney'). His edits and productions have seen love from the likes of Harvey, Optimo, Rub n Tug, Joakim, Spencer Parker, Floating Points, Tim Sweeney, Bottin and Jacques Renault; and his parties are easily the best in New York.

Checkmate.

About Mister Saturday

Eamon Harkin and Justin Carter are Mister Saturday Night. We know. It’s a funny thing, two guys being called one Mister, but think of it like the holy trinity. Or perhaps Voltron. That’s probably more accurate—certainly less offensive.

Each man, on his own, spent years kicking around New York, DJing as residents in venues long gone, collecting records of all kinds, throwing parties and honing social chemistry skills. And then one day, they combined all their knowledge and musical love to form one party, which also happens to be called Mister Saturday Night.

The party calls the lofts and back yards of Brooklyn its home, places where the normal rules and stigmas of that naughty word ‘club’ don’t apply. People feel comfortable, like they’re at someone’s house: they talk to their friends; they even talk to people they don’t know. And, of course, they dance—but not just a little bit. They dance like they haven’t before, or like they’ve forgotten they could, because the place is right, and the vibe is right, and because Eamon and Justin play from their hearts.

That energy is contagious. When Eamon and Justin have hosted guests to play with them, they've done things even they didn't think they'd do. After a rainstorm that fried nearly every piece of equipment in the booth, Chez Damier played for three hours on a busted CDJ, inviting everyone to introduce him or herself to a dancefloor neighbor in between tracks. DJ Harvey, after flinging open the loft window overlooking the train tracks at Market Hotel, coaxed an MTA worker into dancing. Larry Heard even sang 'Can You Feel It', and we can assure you that that's not the norm for the soft-spoken man.

But this is no ordinary party, and these are no ordinary guys. Mister Saturday Night is special.
