Round One of Two

Can you believe it's been a month? We've missed you. The longing is over this weekend in a very big way, though. It's the first of a Mister Saturday Night two-Saturday doubleheader. For this one, Justin's returning home to play alongside Eamon, Caribou's joining the festivities, and the big, blue soundsystem is already plugged in and warmed up.

Tickets for this and next weekends' parties are on sale here. We've sold a lot for this weekend already, and even though we're at a pretty big space (location details to the right) there's a chance that we might fill up, so if you're sure you want to come, it's a good idea to purchase in advance. Otherwise, RSVP, and get there early!

This Weekend & Beyond

This weekend, we're back to doing the Mister like you know it best. No holiday extravaganza or collaboration, just a good, old-fashioned, one-room, one-soundsystem, Justin-Eamon-and-guest, free-beer-for-the-first-hour kind of get down. Does that mean it won't be special? Of course not.

In fact, it will be extra special. Our guest is Omar S, who, making his third showing at MSN, is now our most frequent musical companion. It's no wonder why we've asked him back as often as we have. In addition to consistently producing tracks that make their way into Justin and Eamon's sets, he's a phenomenal DJ, a master of dancefloor hypnosis. This will also be the last time that Eamon and Justin play together in New York for a while. Justin's headed off to Berlin for a few months, and their only joint gigs until April will be in Europe. That makes this a going-away party of sorts.

It's certainly not the kind of going-away where you should be shedding tears, though: the future's looking bright. While Justin's away, joining Eamon on deck duty will be SoulPhiction, Greg Wilson and Todd Terje – the latter of whom we've been trying to bring back to New York for years. And when Justin comes back in April, he and Eamon will be joined by Caribou(!!!!!) and... well, that's enough for now, but there's another exclamation-point worthy guest playing with us on Saturday, April 9th.

Next Up, Mister Saturday and Mister S

After a two-floored New Year's Eve party and a collaboration with Spank, Mister Saturday Night heads back to the basics: one dancefloor, two residents, one guest and a real nice set of speakers. We love a big to-do, but simplicity is golden.

Our guest is none other than Omar S, who, making his third showing at MSN, will become our most frequent musical companion. It's no wonder why we've asked him back as often as we have. In addition to consistently producing tracks that make their way into Justin and Eamon's sets (note the two appearances on their NYE mix), he's a phenomenal DJ, a master of dancefloor hypnosis.

This will also be the last time that Eamon and Justin play together in the home loft for a couple months. Justin's headed off to Berlin for February, March and April (see the note at the bottom), and their only joint gigs for a while will be in Europe. That makes this a going-away party of sorts, and they'll definitely be pulling out the stops to make it right.

Everything else that usually makes it special will be in effect as well, with a reasonably priced bar run by folks with a sweet demeanor, free beer from 10pm to 11pm, a door staff that's genteel and a space that feels like home. It's always good to be here.

note. To be clear, Justin's not pulling an escape from New York/everything's better in Berlin move… New York beats Berlin every Mister Saturday Night of the year as far as he's concerned. It's just a work thing.

Just Like We Pictured It

Our first party of the year is upon us. We told you a little bit about it last week, but we wanted to give you a bit more info. This edition of Mister Saturday Night is a special collaboration with a set of DJs who call their jam 'Spank'. Spank isn't just any party, though; it's on the cutting edge of Brooklyn's gay scene – our very own Horse Meat Disco (if you will) but always in lofts with more house music (still some disco), more outlandish performances and their very own zine.

They, and we, have been longing for a truly mixed party for years, and so we decided we'd make it happen. New York, Just Like I Pictured It is what we're calling it. That's not a nod to some bygone era, but a statement that we're making New York what we want it to be right now. (It is still possible, no matter what anyone tells you.)

So, what should you expect? Familiar faces from our party, new faces from their party, lots of dancing to sets from Mister Saturday Night residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin, more dancing to sets from Spank residents Sean B and Will Automagic, coziness courtesy of 12-turn-13 (which is opening a little lounge area that they've never used before), free beer for the first hour of the party, the sweet tones of our Turbosound speakers and atmospheric lighting to accent your evening.

In other words, New York, just like you pictured it.

Something A Little Different

To ring in the new year we're partnering up with our friends Sean B and Will Automagic from Spank to bring you New York Just Like I Pictured It – a party combing the philosophies and followers of two of New York's most beloved parties at the always wonderful 12-turn-13 loft space.

Consider the top drawer music selection, superior sound production and the passionate and open-minded crowd of Mister Saturday Night alongside the flamboyance, swagger and sense of adventure of the Spank parties and you've got the type of unique and interesting concoction which only a city like New York can bring.

You said your new years resolution was to try new things. Well here's your chance! This one's is this Saturday, January 15th. Not too long away. Details on the flyer, advanced tickets here. Save that date!

The Final Details for NYE

The big night is almost upon us! Here's a recap of what's happening at this special expanded edition of Mister Saturday Night..

In one room, residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will be joined for a midnight set by Detroit wunderkind Kyle Hall, riding a very special sound system all night long. Local production duo Bad Decision open proceedings up from 9pm.

In the other room is Martyn, a producer recognized as one of the world's best known dubstep creators but who also plays diverse sets which find the likes of Prince, J Dilla and Washed Out rubbing shoulders with more futuristic sounds. Rounding out the room with Martyn is DJ Qu, a fantastic local jock and the man behind of one of our favorite labels, Strength Music.

We're also taking extra special care of the production for this one. Both rooms will be fantastically bedecked by Jessica Grindstaff, a set designer whose work has graced stages from Amsterdam to Australia to our hometown Brooklyn Academy of Music (and our Halloween party back in October).

We've also got an open champagne bar all night long AND a special hand printed mix CD created especially for the party by Eamon & Justin (limited to the first 200 folks through the door). There's going to be plenty of room to dance, relax and chat with friends in both rooms as well as an outdoor patio where you can get a breath of fresh air. There will also be plenty of bathrooms and bar staff to keep things flowing nicely through the night.

Remember that this is a ticket-only affair. Tickets are selling quickly so get yours now over here to avoid disappointment. We will not be selling tickets on the door! Tickets are all sold out.

Ticket-holders will be emailed the address details on the evening of Dec 30th and also right after sales close at noon on the 31st. Rest assured that the venue is at a convenient location, close to train stops accessible in Manhattan and Brooklyn.

Justin's Top Five Tracks of the Year

This year I discovered Truth Is Light Records, a great Canadian label releasing simple edits of brilliant, largely obscure, genre-unspecific gems. I could've chosen most any of the records I ordered from them this year, but "Be Thankful", the A-side off the first record in a limited edition 45 series they're doing, got the most deck time. Slightly disco-ey, thoroughly old-school electro, it toes just the right line to make it the perfect bridge between house, modern soul and all kinds of other tracks, and though it's a tool, it's never outshined by what comes before or after it. (Sadly, I couldn't find a version of the track to post here, but you can listen to it on the TIL page.)

This New Year's Eve, Mister Saturday Night is bringing you the best of both worlds.

We're keeping our unique loft party intimacy, with plenty of room to dance and high quality music with amazing sound – but we're expanding things a bit. In one room, residents Justin Carter and Eamon Harkin will be joined for a midnight set by Kyle Hall, a 19-year-old Detroit wunderkind, who's been trailblazing for a new generation of music makers over the past two years. Rounding out the room with Martyn is DJ Qu, a fantastic local jock and the man behind of one of our favorite labels, Strength Music; and opening the festivities for Eamon, Justin and Kyle are production duo Bad Decision.

The multi-roomed event space where the party's going down will be fantastically bedecked by Jessica Grindstaff, a set designer whose work has graced stages from Amsterdam to Australia to our hometown Brooklyn Academy of Music (with the Kronos Quartet, no less).

What else? How about an open champagne bar, not just for the ball drop, but all night? And an outdoor patio where you can get a breath of fresh air or smoke a cigarette? We have both of those.

The catch? In order to keep it intimate (and within the legal capacity of the venue), you have to buy an advance ticket to get in. We won't announce the address (rest assured, though, that it's a convenient location, close to train stops accessible in Manhattan and Brooklyn, and it's not way, way out there), and even if you figure out where it is, we won't be selling any tickets at the door, because it's gonna be sold out.

Weekend Recap

We packed, we played, and we didn't really sleep: it was a good weekend in Mister Saturday Night land. The new loft space felt warmer than ever before, mostly because we fixed our Optikinetics oil wheel projector (the thing producing that Mars-like glow in the picture above).

Eamon and I were both chuffed with our sets ('I've Got A Feeling' by The Beatles closing it out was the easy highlight), and Superpitcher's record selection, mixing and fashion sensibility were full of class – pretty much just what you'd expect from someone who makes such tasteful and lush techno.

Sunday's surprise gig at Le Bain was a great way to wind it down. The view from up there is just lovely; you can see the new World Trade Center in progress. Just a few more floors and it'll be taller than anything else down there. We're surprised and excited to see it's coming along.

A Recap

It was a good weekend. The crowds at both Down N Derby and Boston's No Tomorrow party were full of dressed up weirdos. Friday was mostly about the disco, and Saturday we got to dig into the techno bins. We were pleasantly surprised to find out that the booth at our Boston gig was outfitted with an old UREI, and the soundsystem had been set up by a DJ who used to play at the Paradise Garage. Properly kicking... Thanks to all who came out to the parties. Hopefully we'll see you out this weekend!

Skating and Boston This Weekend

We're playing music for skating tonight and music for Boston tomorrow night. That's disco and disco-influenced for the former and music for early last calls for the latter. We'll see you on the dancefloor/rink.

The Perfect Party: Resident Advisor Talks To Us

A few months ago, I got an email from Lee Smith, a writer for Resident Advisor, asking me about the ins and outs of throwing parties. The resulting article is up on RA now. It's a good read, and you should definitely check it out. I thought it'd be interesting to post all the questions and answers that we exchanged as a supplement to the article. Roll, Skate, Bounce, Tap?

Justin's bringing his It's Always Fair Weather soundtrack to the roller disco on Friday in hopes that someone knows how to tap on their skates.

The Essence

This weekend we're focusing on the essence of Mister Saturday Night – the residents. Eamon and Justin are holding it down all by themselves, stretching out for at least eight hours, dipping into all corners of their far-flung collections.

This one's going down at our new Brooklyn home – address info and directions will be posted on Friday in case you don't have it from last time around – and on the soundsystem that production/DJ duo Bad Decision have generously hooked up for us. If you came for our party on November 6, you heard it, and if you didn't, trust us when we say it's truly spectacular.

As usual, the space will be cozy, with plenty of places to sit, lots of wood-floor real estate for dancing, and a patio where you can get some cool air and smoke cigarettes (please no smoking indoors though...). Beer's free from 10p to 11p, and because we don't have the expenses associated with hosting a guest, the party's $5 less than usual.
